Two Paths of a Soul

In Brihdaranyak Upanishad, there is a description of either two paths which a soul may take. One path leads from the north pole to the Sun and the Sun acts as a wormhole for further travel of the soul to the heavens. This path is usually taken by accomplished souls who leave their bodies naturally in the daytime during the summer solstice (Uttarayana).

Those who die during the winter solstice or when it is dark obscured skies etc, those souls follow the path from the south pole to the pole of the moon which is the place for Pitras (ancestral souls). All souls which go to the moon return to Earth after specified periods which vary in each case.

Bhishma Pitamaha (Mahabharata) waited for Uttarayana to leave this world. During Uttarayana, all auspicious activities such as Yajnas, marriages, etc. are carried out. Also, one day and night of the gods is equal to one year of men. Therefore, Uttarayana is the period of daytime for Devtas (gods) and Dakshinayana is the night for them. During Dakshinayana the sky is generally filled with clouds.

The departed souls travelling through the Sun for their onward destination in Heavens pass through the lake of fire. The 'surrendered souls' or souls following a covenant may find separate heaven for believers on Saturn.

The Katho-Upanishad is a collection of philosophical poems representing a conversation between the sage Naciketas and Yama (god of death). They discuss the nature of Atman, Brahman and Moksha (liberation) in verse 20.

अणोरणीयान्महतो महीयानात्मास्य जन्तोर्निहितो गुहायां ।

तमक्रतुः पश्यति वीतशोको धातुः प्रसादान्महिमानमात्मनः ॥ २० ॥

Finer than the fine, huger than the huge the Self hides in the secret heart of the creature: when a person strips oneself of desire and is weaned from sorrow, then one realizes the Self, purified from the mental elements one sees the greatness of the Self.
